Position Description

POSITION SUMMARY
Residence Directors work with the Residence Life Team to foster a residential environment
that fulfills the goals and vision of the Office of Residence Life Mission Statement: To create
safe and inclusive learning communities that support, challenge, and inspire all students to
be ethical leaders and citizens in a diverse society. Additionally, to support Residence Life
Pillars: Connections, Diversity & Social Justice, Learning, Leadership Development and
Professional Development. Residence Directors are full-time master’s level 12-month
live-in staff members who provide a holistic approach to working with students and guests
in a variety of areas in their lives including personal and academic concerns. Each
Residence Director will coordinate and administer all aspects of a residence life program
in one residence hall/residential complex, possibly including the development and support
of a Residential Learning Community.

Responsibilities associated with this student-centered position may include the following:
creating connections and implementing a student development program within a residence
hall/residential complex of approximately 400-900 students; selecting, training, supervising
and evaluating graduate and undergraduate student staff; coordinating a Residential Learning
Community with staff, students and faculty; mentoring students related to academic success;
developing and nurturing student leaders; advising student organizations; developing and
implementing programs; adjudicating student conduct hearings; providing individual assistance
to students; coordinating summer housing operations; and other duties as assigned.

The selected candidate will be well-organized and able to work well under pressure with
multiple and consistently changing priorities. To be successful in this position, the Residence
Director must have excellent interpersonal and written communication, organization,
administrative skills and supervision experience. An expressed and demonstrated
commitment to diversity & social justice and student development is critical for this position.

As an administrative official of the University, the Residence Director will be under the supervision
of a Residence Life Central Staff Member. This position includes working with diverse groups
of students, staff, guests and customers such as non-traditionally aged; gender diverse;
religiously diverse; international; persons with disabilities; gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and
transgender; persons of color; and socio-economic status.

REQUIREMENTS
Required:
• Master’s degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling or a related field
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity & social justice
• Previous supervision experience is required (minimum of 9 months experience).
• Previous Residence Life live-in experience
Preferred:
• Demonstrated commitment to academic success (i.e. working with residential learning
communities, faculty members, academic focus programs/initiatives, etc)
• Demonstrated commitment to student and community development
• Student conduct experience
• Crisis management experience

SALARY AND BENEFITS
Remuneration and benefits are commensurate with experience. Furnished two-bedroom
apartment provided. The Residence Director may have one adult (spouse, partner, or
adult guest) and any children or legal dependents living in their apartment during
the employment period. In addition, a meal plan is provided when the dining halls
are open and a partial meal plan is provided for spouse/partner/adult guest.
Children from ages one to five receive a meal plan at no cost, and children from
ages six to seventeen will receive a 1/3 reduction in the cost of board. We also
have a pet policy; ask one of our staff for more information.
